Monitoring, Observability, and the Gap Between Them

The distinction gets argued about more than it gets used. Monitoring answers "is the thing I expected to break, broken?" — you defined the check in advance. Observability answers "why is this behaving strangely?" for questions you did not anticipate. Both are useful. Neither closes the loop.

The missing third thing

After detection and after diagnosis, something has to happen: retry, escalate, notify the customer, update the status page, open a ticket. In most stacks that part lives in scripts, cron jobs and human memory — the least observable part of the whole system.

“Everyone instruments detection. Almost nobody instruments the response — which is the part that runs while customers are waiting.”

That response path is what Atflow makes explicit. Not a replacement for your metrics stack — the part that decides what happens after it fires.
